PVsyst Software Getting Started Tutorial

Getting Started with PVsyst:

PVsyst Software Getting Started TutorialIn this article, we will be looking at the PVsyst software. PVsyst is a wonderful software for solar plant generation forecasting, sizing of the solar generation plant, and selecting component for the plant. It also help us in the analysis of the generation system that what will be our output and its generation capabilities. it is a standard software in the market. So, let’s start by defining the PVsyst software and then I will explain how to use it. After reading this article, you will be able to perform the complete analysis of any system like a professional.

So, Let Start by formally defining, PVsyst version 6.79 is a PC software analysis of complete it deals with grid-connected and stand-alone PV systems and includes extensive PV system component databases as well as General solar energy tools.

PVsyst

so, we all know that in a grid-tied system the generation by the solar panel is connected to the AC/DC inverter and the inverter is connected to the bi-directional meter and the household supply. when the generation by the Solar Panel exceedes the consumption in the household then the extra supply is transferred through the bi-directional meter to the WapdaElectric Supply company in Pakistan” similarly during the off-peak hours when there is no energy source then the electricity is transferred from Wapda through the bi-directional meter to the house.

First of all we will open the software by double clicking on its icon and we will go to the database.

PVsyst

After clicking on the database button this will open the geographical site because we first of all want to configure the site where solar system will be installed.

PVsyst

After clicking the geographical sites a new window will appear asking for the country and the site information; so, first of all, we will select our region and country and after that, we will click ok if the site is not available on the database then we can use a Google Map Location for Spotting the longitude and latitude of the desired area where our solar system will be installed.

I have added a new location to the database you can add yours also very easily if you have any problem leave a comment below.

Now let’s move on to the project designing

PVsyst

Select the required System

PVsyst

Click on the grid connected, in project designing we will first insert the site included in the database, after each step we will save the site and after saving the orientation window will be highlighted as shown below.

PVsyst

I have inserted all the relevant required details now it’s time to set the other parameters like orientation

As far as orientation is concerned you must have heard that the sun rises in the east. So the orientation of the solar panel must be in south because the sun moves from east to west.

PVsyst

so in orientation, two things are very important one is the tilt angle and the second is azimuth angle so by the combination of these two we can specify the orientation of our solar panel the tilt angle at which the system will generate maximum output we can practically check the angle using any compass to the orientation PVsyst Software will analyze the system angles and will tell us at which angle we will get maximum output from the panels.

PVsyst

After selecting the specific orientation for power generating plant shift our attention toward the system what will be the parameters of this solar system

PVsyst

So, for selecting the parameters of our solar panel, we will first of all, select the type of panel which we will be using for our project, we will select the brand of the solar panel, and the wattage of the panel to be used

PVsyst

If you are looking for a specific brand and the brand is not included in the PVsyst software then you will get the pan file from the company website which includes all the parameters of the solar panel, add company pan file into the software to get the better analysis.

Below is the pan file detail for the Canadian solar panels 260 watt 26 volt.

PVsyst

PVsyst

first of all, we select our panels, then inverter for AC to DC conversion; the number of Strings and number of panels in series. Here we have an operating value and input maximum voltage value of the panel considering the input maximum power of the Solar Panel; we will make a string and the number of panels in series makes us able to calculate the losses in our generating system and the panels series arrays that will best suit our system.

Now Press ok and check the detailed losses of the solar system

PVsyst

Now we have to check all the parameters most of them are accurate according to the data you provided, the system analyzed the scenario, you just need to make some changes that include selecting the yearly soiling loss factor to 3 percent that is default just select and click ok.

PVsyst

Next one is horizon which is showing the path of the sun at which tilt angle and azimuth the panel has its sun path and output as shown below.

PVsyst

So, now we have several tabs left, like shading if there is any water tank or tree that we can design the 3d modeling for our system we can also set several limitations when in grid tied after setting all we will save our project and click the simulation

At the end of the simulation the software will provide you a report for the desired system that will include the system production kwh/yrs., normalized production, specific production, array losses, performance ratio, system losses.

We can print the report also which will include all your data, your panel, arrays data, inverter data, and the desired voltage and the expected resultant output voltage.

So in this report we will have the data regarding the solar panels; which solar panel we are using, its wattage value, type of inverter using, and the data set of the inverter, the maximum input voltage of the inverter, which method of installation is adopted in the Solar generation system like series strings and how many arrays are connected in parallel. It will also tell us that how much area will be required for specific solar panel if we have any 3D modeling and designing then 3D modelling will be displayed in report . This software will tell us the exact value that will be produced by the panels in one year also for each month it will generate a wonderful chart that will tell us that in which month we will have our maximum generation too.
