Speaker repairing at home, Description:

Speaker Repairing at Home– In this article, I am going to explain how to fix or repair a speaker at home in just 30 minutes. After reading this article, you won’t need to go to any speaker repairing shop. If you take a look at your speaker, you will find that it actually doesn’t have any complicated parts. In most cases, usually, the voice coil is damaged or the Cone, or the Spider, or in worst cases the magnet. All these parts are easily available and can be replaced in no time. So, if this is your first time and you are just getting started with the speak repairing then this article is for you. If you find anything difficult then you also watch my video tutorial given at the end of this article.

Seriously, I have seen guys dumping such high-quality and expensive speakers because of faulty voice coil or Cone. Recently I met such a guy who was selling a speaker to a junkman for half a dollar and that’s when I jumped in and offered him 1 dollar and he happily handed over the speaker to me.

I checked everything very quickly and I found out it had a damaged voice coil, Cone, and Cap. I purchased this speaker just to explain how to repair a speaker at home. Before, I am going to explain how to fix a speaker, first, let’s take a look at different parts of a speaker and their function.

Parts of a Speaker:

Diaphragm: a diaphragm is the thin, semi-rigid membrane attached to the voice coil, which moves in a magnetic gap, vibrating the diaphragm, and producing sound. It can also be called a cone, though not all speaker diaphragms are cone-shaped. The Diaphragm Moves back and forth allowing the air in the surroundings to move; creating sound.

Dust Cap: The dust cap is a gently curved dome mounted either in concave or convex orientation over the central hole of most loudspeaker diaphragms. Dust Cap Protects the Voice Coil from dust, keep these out of the reach of children as these are just asking to be pushed in.

Surround: A lining that connects the basket with the diaphragm.

Spider: A type of suspension that keeps tension on the voice coil but allowing it to move, acts similar to the struts on a car that reduces unnecessary vibration.

Suspension: This part of a speaker assembly consists of the surround and the spider.

Basket: An assembly containing all of the components of a speaker driver – the frame, cone, terminals, and voice coil – with the exception of the magnet structure.

Voice Coil: Moves the diaphragm via a magnetic field created by the current in the wire.

Magnet: Often rare earth neodymium.

I removed the damaged parts of the Speaker and purchased the new ones as you can see in the image above. The spider looks good and I didn’t feel like changing it, so I will continue with the same speaker spider.

Before placing the voice coil, cut the coil wires to the desired length, and remove the insulation from the tips as we will be soldering these voice coil wires to the other wires, as you can see in the image above, there are two more copper wires.

Fixing the Voice Coil is the most important step and you will need to spent time on this as the overall voice quality depends on it.

Never completely insert the voice coil keep at least 30% part of the voice coil above the spider. On the inside you can use X-ray sheets or think cardboard sheets, we do it for the proper spacing, don’t pour any adhesive on the inside otherwise, the voice coil won’t move or vibrate. When everything is placed then you can apply the Speaker repair adhesive. Give it at least 20 minutes to dry.

The next step is then to attach the Cone with the voice coil. Make two holes in the speaker cone for the wires which we will need to solder to the speaker voice coil.

Apply adhesive, the voice coil, and the cone need to be attached, the two parts move together. After soldering is done, then also apply adhesive to the wires.

Now, your speaker is ready, you can connect the wires with the sound system and check your speaker. If you leave the voice coil part uncovered the dust and particles will soon block the voice coil movement and then you won’t feel the same sound quality, or it may stop working. So, the good choice is to put a Cap and secure it with adhesive.

Looks really cool. Seriously, I feel like as if I have purchased a new speaker. Now the final, step is to attach a lead so that I can connect it with the sound system.

I solder the two wires of this RCA cable with the contact on the speaker body, these contacts are internally connected with the voice coil. It’s 100% ready for testing.

I was pretty impressed with the results, I had such nice sound quality. Although I didn’t apply any base and I kept the sound low as I was testing it outdoors. I played copyright-free music for demonstration purposes. But Later I tested it with other songs and I was really happy. My total cost including the purchase is just 4 dollars, pretty amazing.
