Voltage Doubler, Voltage Doubler Circuit,

Voltage Doubler, Description:

As its name suggests, a Voltage Doubler is a voltage multiplier circuit that has a voltage multiplication factor of two. A voltage doubler is an electronic circuit which charges capacitors from the input voltage and switches these charges in such a way that, in the ideal case, exactly twice the voltage is produced at the output as at its input. Voltage Doublers can be found in most of the electronic circuits. The circuit which is given below is one of the types of the Voltage Doubler circuits, that can be easily made and used in different types of digital circuits. In some digital circuits, an extra clock circuit is available or in these circuits an extra Schmitt trigger gate is available. If a buffered clock signal is available then we will only need 4 electronic components C4, C5, D1, and D2, and if your circuit is working on a 5 volts supply, after using this Voltage Doubler circuit then 10 volts will be available.  Following is the Voltage Doubler circuit diagram which is used to convert 5Volts into 10Volts.

Voltage Doubler

If you ever need to make an Oscillator from an extra unused gate then you will need two more electronic components R1 and C3. This way you can make an extremely low cost 5 Volts to 10 Volts DC supply using the Voltage Double. The circuit which you can see above will give you 10 to 20mA.

The components needed for making this Voltage Double Circuit:

  • C1 = 100nf
  • C2 = 100uf 16V
  • C3 = 222 pf (.0022 uf)
  • C4, C5 = 4.7 uf 16V
  • R1 = 10K ohm, ¼ watt
  • D1, D2 = 1n4148
  • 1C1a = any Schmitt trigger gate IC “ 74HC132 / 74HCT132”
